Ep.07: Colourism, Artists Singh Twins MBE, Yaa Gyasi on Homegoing
This month’s long listen was recorded live at Riposte Magazine issue launch at the Ace Hotel London. It explores the issue of colourism, which is the hierarchy of skin shades prevalent within minority communities. Chrystal and Heta spoke to Dr Aisha Phoenix, from the university of SOAS. She is a writer and researcher specialising in colourism. They were also joined by Kay Montano, renowned makeup artist and co-founder of ThandieKay, which she started with acclaimed actor, Thandie Newton.
They interviewed Amrit and Rabindra Singh, otherwise known as The Singh Twins MBE, contemporary British artists of international acclaim. Their colourful decorative pictures explore a range of themes ranging from materialism to celebrity culture to politics.
The Twins have exhibited their eclectic work from the Tate Britain to the Smithsonian Institute and held solo shows in prestigious arts institutions like London’s National Portrait Gallery.
Lastly, they showcase “Homegoing” - the extraordinary debut novel from 26 year old, Yaa Gyasi. It’s a novel that describes slavery’s legacy in human terms that earned Yaa Gyasi a seven-figure advance.
