Ep. 32: The Disappeared w/ Filmmakers Mend Mariwany & Taif Alkuhdary, Writer Saidiya Hartman; Singer and Producer Amber Mark; Philadelphia: City Of Murals
In our topic covering The Disappeared, we speak with filmmakers Mend Mariwany and Taif Alkuhdary to find out more about their new documentary Wissam: An Iraqi Story. According to the International Commission for Missing Persons, an estimated 250,000 to 1 million people have disappeared without a trace, we speak to them to find out more about this story. We look at the forgotten histories of those that have reappeared through the writer and academic Saidiya Hartman’s new book Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments: Intimate Histories of Social Upheaval in which she examines the revolution of black intimate life that unfolded in Philadelphia and New York at the beginning of the twentieth century. Plus, we visit Mexico City, often referred to as The Sinking City which may soon disappear if radical action isn’t taken as we ask: How have we got here?
We profile musician and producer Amber Mark. Hailing from NYC, she grew up around the world and we talk about how this influenced her sound and production. Stance speaks about her journey, grief and her new EP What If.
Stance visits Mural Arts, the nation’s largest public art gallery right in the heart of Philadelphia, with over 4000 murals scattered throughout the city. We visit a tour, find out about how it all got started and witness an unveiling of some new work.
