Alison Brie stars in The Revisionist alongside André Holland, Tom Sturridge and Dustin Hoffman. Alex Vlack’s debut narrative feature follows successful novelist Elise Keller, whose search for material for her next book leads her to draw on the people around her, testing the boundaries between creativity, relationships, fiction and real life. Filmmaker Gar O’Rourke’s documentary The Siege of Paradise takes us to Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera, where a population of just over 4,000 residents receives around 3.5 million visitors each year. Through local residents and visiting American content creators, the film looks at tourism, cultural identity and what happens to a place when its global popularity overwhelms local life. Gar chats about the making of the documentary, the role of social media in contemporary travel and the complicated relationship between tourism, the economy and community.

Fifteen years after Miss Representation, filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom returns with Miss Representation: Rise Up. The documentary examines the backlash against women’s progress and how social media, algorithms and AI are being used to harass and silence women and girls. Chrystal chats with Jennifer and others about what has changed since the original documentary, the relationship between technology and power, and the pressures facing women and girls in a digital culture hostile to their existence.

The episode ends with Frédéric Boyer, Artistic Director of the Tribeca Film Festival, who talks about Aly Muritiba’s Funk, set within Rio de Janeiro’s funk scene and following Sabrina, a young artist determined to make it as a successful MC. They also discuss Aly’s unique route into filmmaking, why the film was selected for the International Narrative Competition, and how local politics impacts the films we get to see in world cinema today.
